Studying English in Australia is a popular choice among international students. Having to use English in everyday situations combined with classes at language school ensure that most students improve their English very fast.
The level of courses is generally high and tuition is less than in most other English-speaking countries. If choosing to study English full-time (e.g. 20 hours a week) for at least 12 weeks, students are also eligible to apply for a student visa.
There is a variety of language courses available: General English, Business English and preparation for IELTS or Cambridge language tests being most popular. There are classes for different levels and students are placed in classes based on a test taken at school. It usually takes about 10 weeks of study to move on to next level of study.
To offer language courses to international students, schools must be registered on CRICOS. Only full-time courses are suitable for applying student visa. While full-time is considered 20 hours of study a week, in some schools part of the course is offered as self-study and contact hours are less. At some schools there is an option of evening classes, which start around 16.15-17pm and end around 9pm.
Many students choose to combine a couple of weeks of English followed by a course at college, thus improving their language skills before attending college but also adding a bit extra time to their student visa as it is possible to have a little break between 2 courses.
