Australia has a large network of private colleges that mainly cater for international students. The typical courses available at those colleges are business administration, accounting, marketing, IT, travel & tourism management, hospitality, sport & fitness etc. The length of course is typically 6 months to 2,5 years (certificate III to advanced diploma level), with intakes 4 times a year. Some colleges also offer mid-term intakes.
To qualify for student visa, the chosen course must be registered on CRICOS and be taught full-time (20 hours a week). The study program and times are up to individual colleges and there are wide variety of study schedules. There are both day and evening courses, and in some instances part of the study is self-study, so the contact hours are limited to couple of days a week.
The study at college progresses from Certificate level to Diploma and Advanced Diploma level. Taking into account student’s previous education it might be possible to receive credits and obtain higher qualification with less time.
To attend a college, international students generally require proof of English of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. When enrolling through Visafy, in some instances we can organise for you free language test straight at college and formal exam is not necessary.
Geographically speaking, the largest concentration of private colleges is in Sydney and Melbourne, with Perth and Brisbane offering a decent choice of options as well. The other regional centres and smaller towns have limited options for international students and tuition fees are often higher.
More directed at local students, TAFE (Technical and Further Education) has a variety of courses, and campuses all over Australia. The tuitions fees are often double of those at private colleges. However not all courses are available for international students – refer to CRICOS list for eligible courses.
